JONES, Okla. — Days after leading his team to its first state championship, Jones quarterback Brandon George was named the state’s Gatorade Football Player of the Year.

Brandon George, a senior, completed 71 percent of his passes for 4,035 yards and 44 touchdowns, while throwing just five interceptions. He also rushed for 1,305 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Jones completed a 15-0 season Friday with a 16-6 win over Plainview for the Class 3A title. In that game, George completed 17 of 26 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 95 yards and a two-point conversion.

“Brandon George can run, he can throw and he really understands the game,” Lincoln Christian coach Darren Melton said in a release. “He’s a fabulous leader and he always puts his team in good plays. He’s impossible to prepare for because he can do everything on the field.”

George is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, which will be announced in December.

He is also able to select a national or local or youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also academic achievement and strong character demonstrated on and off the field.

Prior to moving to Oklahoma, George played at Clay High School in Green Cove Springs, Fla. He is also a member of College Bound Athletics, an athletic development and recruiting organization based out of Nashville, Tenn.
